A month of stories, 31 in all ... desperate divas and ambitious execs, cuckolded housewives and puzzled politicians, squabbling sisters and nasty neighbours ... all get a guernsey in this collection of fiction and non-fiction about people funny and very unfunny too.

Vestal Aversion edition by Matt Potter Literature Fiction eBooks

Matt Potter's flash fiction surprises at every turn. His range is wide, exploring topics from extramarital affairs to mean-spirited childhood pranks, and his characters always come through as very human. I enjoyed all thirty one of these stories, but two I'd like to mention in particular are Dotting every 'i' and Berniece. The former tells of a writer whose line editor, too eager for economy of words, enacts a series of rules that become increasingly ridiculous, eventually going so far as to just ban every third word. It's a hilarious tale that also warns of what can happen when writing becomes all about capitalist considerations. In Berniece, Potter creates a unique caretaker of dogs nearing their deaths, saving them from being put to sleep when they reach their days of incontinence and immobility, charging for her services. Another odd example of capitalism in action, I loved the dark comedic feel in this one. Overall, an entertaining and often thought-provoking collection.

Vestal Aversion edition by Matt Potter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book held my attention from page one to the end. It is an 'honest' book, in the sense that the writing is telling stories based on real life, without any pretenses in the writing or writing style. The author lets it all hang out and lets the reader decide how the story will land. The author makes no excuses and stands behind his characters, which is the only way to write a story (in my humble opinion). It's also a very humourous book which is refreshing these days!
