British novelist Brian Hennigan's drily hilarious antihero Patrick Robertson is a cynical, perpetually sauced master salesman, devoted drinker, and connoisseur of Asia's finest hotels. In Patrick's world, meeting a beautiful stranger for drinks in Bangkok is par for the course. Being kidnapped afterwards by the People's Earth Friendly Liberation Group, mistaken for the Patrick Robertson from the International Monetary Fund, and transported to the jungle (along with several other erroneously-abducted Patrick Robertsons) to meet certain death is decidedly gauche. Patrick must escape his captors, brave the perils of the deadly, Chardonnay-less rainforest and find his way back to civilization. To survive, he must use all his sales training and lust for the good life -- plus a hefty dose of betrayal, murder, theft and identity theft.

Patrick Robertson A Tale Of Adventure eBook Brian Hennigan

I ordered this book after hearing two separate recommendations from comedians (Maria Bamford and Doug Stanhope) and did not know what to expect, as Hennigan is a first-time author. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is a great book! The writing is first rate - it's clever, it flow like water, and the style is uniquely sardonic. He has a curiously refreshing way of phrasing things. The story is an absurdly hilarious satire of modern corporate life. And while it was written in '99 and reprinted recently, the humor totally holds up. The main character, being a horrible alcoholic degenerate and liar, is somehow likable and believable. The book lampoons many of the stereotypes one encounters in business and on the road in a way I haven't seen elsewhere.

Since I wouldn't be a good hipster if I didn't compare the book to two other references, I'll say that it is like Confederacy of Dunces meets Kitchen Confidential. Both are written by literary outsiders, and plot-wise, the misadventure of Patrick Robertson are as surreal and funny as Ignatius J Reilly but obviously based on the wily real-world professional experiences of the author as in Bourdain's book.

It is a hilarious pleasure to read. If you're look for a fun, light read with some dark humor and pungent satire, this is a good choice.

Patrick Robertson A Tale Of Adventure eBook Brian Hennigan Reviews

At one point I began highlighting this book as if I was annotating it for English class, but then I stopped because the entire book is quotable. That said, the book could use a good line edit. I found tons of typos near the end of the book.
a very funny and entertaining book
Great story about a sociopath salesman on an adventure. I was very entertained, not for everyone.
Thrilling page turner.
An amazing dive into the psyche of a delusional businessman. I knew they were all instruments of the devil. Now I have a sordid back story to support my fears and distrusts. Excellent pool side or beach side read. Might I suggest sun screen.
It took me a while to get the voice and tone right in my head, but by half way through the subtle (at least to my brain in an airport) lapses in logic and humanity start to be more obviously. I want to read it again to catch what I may have missed the first time - the salesman (Brian and or Patrick) had me hook, line, and sinker.

Very entertaining read, and worth a 2nd time though even.
Let this review serve as a request. Brian, please write another book! This wondrous tale is hilarious, unexpected and irreverent in all the right ways. The only problem I had was constantly hearing Brian's voice in my head while I was reading. My impression is worse than Doug Stanhope's so it was somewhat distracting. Honestly this was one of the better fiction books I have read since "Slaughter House Five". The only way it could have been better is if Johnny Depp had written the forward.
