This was a very entertaining and enjoyable read. I especially enjoyed the autobiographical piece. Farrell surely saved the best for last in Last Papers. I would also highly recommend some of Farrell other writings, Liverpool Roared, Mersey Boys. Bowery Ripper on Loose, Zen Babe, and the Irish Papers among others. The wit and imagination in Last Papers as well as his other books is pure Farrell genius. Farrell has traveled all over the world and when I read his work I feel I have also. He is a true talent and I give this book an A.

I was first made aware of Steven Farrell's writing though a book he wrote called Mersey Boys that I loved. The Last Papers did not disappoint, and I highly recommend it. The first story, "Bowery Ripper on the Loose", reminded me of a cross between The Wanderers and From Hell, two stories that I love.
A lurid writing style that reminds me of Lester Dent, and I mean that as a compliment. I like that sort of thing!
“Last Papers” means just what the title implies. Is this Steven G. Farrell’s most unfortunate title yet? Sadly, we will have to part with Farrell’s everyman writing style as he moves toward a well deserved retirement from writing. This compilation reads like an all you can eat buffet in Las Vegas - with lots of different flavors. Gangster stories, British Invasion influences, a bit of old Ireland, all mixed together with Steve’s well traveled, bare knuckle attitude. Most enjoyable was getting to know Steve the person in his sometimes emotional autobiography. Congrats on your 5 star career Steven! We are going to miss you.
It covered a wide variety of interesting topics. Farrell likes to do narratives on stories that reflect his wide variety of experiences in his many travels. His writing reminds me of Hemingway. It takes you into situations that are interesting and unique. This is a good variety of topics.
In what apparently might be the author's last collection of writing (Paper 9 is titled "Retiring from Writing"), Steven Farrell, weaves together an eclectic group of prose or "papers." In this book "Last Papers," he covers the gamut of various types of writing novella, short stories -- including a trilogy, a stage play based on his earlier work Mersey Boys, essays as well as a detailed autobiography in memoir form as the conclusion. Farrell's real life has had as many twists and turns as a good novel, and I enjoyed his non-fiction essay "Retiring from Writing" section as much as any of the others. Farrell has obvious talent and he had this reader hoping he was being sarcastic in the aforementioned piece and may be inspired to write again in the future.
Mister Farrell has put together a fascinating assortment of his writing efforts in "Last Papers." He takes the reader through the Bowery of New York for a period piece murder mystery in "Bowery Ripper," into a first person narrative of "The Crimson Druid of Wisconsin," several short stories, a stage play that re-imagines the interactions of the Beatles as they try to adjust to fame in "Mersey Boys," to the autobiographical charting in "Last Papers." Mister Farrell's rich and vivid attention to detail and pace makes each piece a unique experience.

This is a very entertaining collection that displays an alert, active, and keenly observant eye for the many hues of life. From gangsters to monsters to the Beatles to boxers to ordinary people, Farrell has the ability to round each character into shape and have that character effectively perform his or her role. However, I do question the author's assertion that he is "retiring" from writing. We need more talented voices and chroniclers like Mister Farrell. Besides, once a writer, always ...
I hope Last Papers is not, in fact, the last collection of papers Steve Farrell publishes. This eclectic collection includes a variety of writings in an impressive range of genres, from crime to autobiography. Farrell's interests--crime, Irish heritage, monsters, music, regionalism, and more--infuse each story, and his good humor and Midwestern sensibilities charmingly and enthusiastically draw you in.

I particularly enjoyed the trio of stories surrounding the St. Valentine's Day Massacre--an event that has fascinated me since childhood--and Mersey Boys, a stage play version of Farrell's novel about the Beatles when they were young men in Liverpool. I know almost nothing about the Beatles beyond their music, and only their most famous music at that, so the play was a revelation to me. I look forward to reading the longer novel version of the story.

Check out Last Papers if you're looking for a good selection of accomplished short writing in several genres.
